CAM'99 is an iPhone camera that records onto tapes. Each tape has one look, a set number of minutes, and every clip in order. Here are answers to the questions people ask most. If yours isn't here, write to us.
The app has its own owner's manual too: open MY TAPES and tapowner's manual.
Blank tapes and purchases
- Every Apple Account gets three starter tapes for free: a SUNDAY T-30, a NITELIFE T-15 and an AQUA DV T-3. The number is the minutes. They come once. If you used them before, for example before reinstalling, the camera shows YOUR STARTER TAPES WERE USED BEFORE.
- To buy more, open MY TAPES and tap + NEW TAPE. Apple handles the payment; we never see your card or your Apple Account. There's no account to make.
- Blank tapes you bought come back by themselves on any iPhone signed in to the same Apple Account, and after you reinstall the app. There's no restore button because you don't need one. Blanks you already recorded on stay used: CAM'99 keeps a list of them in your iCloud Keychain and iCloud storage.
- Recording never asks you to pay.
Refunds
Apple handles every payment, so Apple handles refunds too. Ask for one atreportaproblem.apple.com. We can't refund purchases ourselves.
A refund takes back blank tapes you haven't recorded on. It never touches tapes you've recorded: they keep playing, and you can still save and send them.
Saving and sharing
Open a tape in MY TAPES and tap SEND. Pick the whole tape, a 30-second trailer, or one clip, then SAVE TO PHOTOS or SHARE for the share sheet. Nothing you save or share carries a watermark. When a tape is full, its page also offers DUB TO PHOTOS.
CAM'99 only asks to add to Photos. It never reads your library.
Towns
To note the town of each clip, open the tape in MY TAPES and tick TOWNS on its index card, then allow location access. Approximate location is enough. The town comes from Apple Maps, so a clip recorded offline shows "…" until the phone is back online. Towns are never burned into the picture.
If the tape's page says TOWNS NEED LOCATION ›, tap it to open Settings and allow location access while using the app. Untick TOWNS to stop noting towns on that tape.
If the camera, sound or Photos is off
- The camera shows NO SIGNAL and THE CAMERA AND MIC ARE OFF FOR CAM'99: tap OPEN SETTINGS, or open the Settings app, go to CAM'99, and turn on Camera and Microphone.
- THE CAMERA IS BUSY means a call or another app is using the camera. It comes back by itself when that ends.
- THE PHONE IS FULL means there's no room left to record. Free up some space and press TRY AGAIN.
- A dub says PHOTOS IS OFF FOR CAM'99: tap OPEN SETTINGS, or open the Settings app, go to CAM'99, then Photos, and choose Add Photos Only.
Where your tapes live
- Your tapes are on your iPhone, not on our servers. They go into your phone's iCloud or computer backup like any other app's files, so restoring that backup onto a new phone brings them along.
- Deleting CAM'99 deletes every tape in it. Save the ones you want to keep to Photos first.
- An erased tape waits 30 days before it's gone for good. To get it back, open MY TAPES, tap ERASED, and press PUT BACK.
Analytics
CAM'99 counts how the app is used, without knowing who you are. To turn that off, open the Settings app, go to CAM'99, and turn off Share anonymous usage. Theprivacy policysays what's sent and what isn't.
