CAM'99 is an iPhone camera that records onto tapes. It's made by 140g Labs LLC, which also runs this website, cam99.app. This page says what the app and the site collect, why, who handles it for us, and how to turn it off.

The short version: your tapes stay on your phone. We count how the app and the site are used, without knowing who you are, and you can turn that off.

Your tapes stay on your phone

Towns

If you tick TOWNS on a tape and allow location access, CAM'99 notes roughly where each new clip was recorded (to about a kilometer) and asks Apple Maps for the town's name. Apple receives the position to answer; we never do. Towns stay on your phone.

A tape you save to Photos while TOWNS is ticked carries the position of its first clip with a town, so it shows on the Photos map, the way a camera's videos do. Files you share from the share sheet never carry a position.

You can untick TOWNS on any tape, or turn off location access for CAM'99 in iOS Settings.

Blank tapes and purchases

You buy blank tapes through the App Store. Apple handles the payment; we never see your card or your Apple Account. Apple tells the app which tapes you bought, so they show up on your phones.

So your tapes follow your Apple Account, CAM'99 keeps two things in your iCloud Keychain and iCloud storage, through Apple: a random ID for you, which goes only to Apple with each purchase, and a list of the blank tapes you've used, with tape and purchase identifiers and dates. Neither holds anything you recorded, and neither reaches us.

What the app measures

CAM'99 uses PostHog to count how the app is used and to report crashes, so we can see what works and fix what breaks. It sends:

PostHog also sees your IP address, as any server you connect to does, and uses it to work out your country and city.

The app never sends the names you write, your clips, where you were, transaction or product IDs, or prices, an advertising ID, or anything about your phone's free storage. We don't use this data to advertise, we don't sell it, and we don't track you across other apps or websites.

To turn it off:open the Settings app, go to CAM'99, and turn off Share anonymous usage. From then on the app sends nothing to PostHog, crash reports included.

What this website measures

This site also uses PostHog, loaded after the page has finished loading. It records:

To recognize a returning visitor, PostHog keeps a random ID in a cookie and in your browser's local storage on cam99.app. It isn't linked to who you are, and the site never asks who you are.

To turn it off:use the key below. It stores a note in your browser that you've opted out, and the site then sends nothing. If your browser sends Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control, the site sends nothing either.

The site is served by Cloudflare, which handles each request (including your IP address) to deliver the page and keep the site safe.

App Store links on the site carry a label for the spot on the page they're in, like "site_hero", so Apple can tell us how many downloads each link led to. Nothing about you goes with it.

Who handles it for us

Why we use it

We measure use because we have a legitimate interest in understanding how CAM'99 and its site are used, so we can improve them and fix what breaks. We keep it to events and counts that don't say who you are, and you can turn it off at any time, in the app or on the site. Purchases are handled to give you the tapes you bought. Location is used only after you allow it.

How long we keep it

Analytics events and crash reports are kept for up to seven years, then deleted. Session replays of the website are kept for a much shorter time. Everything on your phone stays until you delete it or the app.

Your rights

If you're in the EU, the UK or another place with similar laws, you can ask us for a copy of the data we hold about you, to correct it, to delete it, or to stop using it, and you can object to the measuring described above. Because we never know who you are, we may not be able to find your data unless you can tell us which install or visit it is; deleting the app, or clearing this site's data in your browser, removes the random ID that links your events together. You can also complain to your data protection authority.

Changes

If this changes, we'll update this page and the date at the top.
